Upon Receiving Your Fish

All fish are shipped with a mild tranquilizer added to the water. This calms the fish and puts them in a relaxed condition for their long journey. Certain steps must be followed to ensure the proper acclimatization of your new arrivals. Below are our recommendations.

  • 1. Empty the contents of your shipping bag into a clean container. A large plastic tub or bucket is best. You will be adding tank water to this so go with the largest available.
  • 2. Insert an air stone in each bucket being used. This will increase the oxygen exchange rate at the surface. A power head or other source can also be used.
  • 3. Take a small amount of tank water and mix it slowly with the fish and water in the bucket.    Approximately 1/8 of the total water volume in the bucket should be added at each step.

  • 4. Once this procedure has been performed twice( two containers or 1/4 of the shipping water volume has been added) start to remove an 1/8 from the bucket before adding 1/8 from the tank.
  • 5. Repeat this procedure several times until the water has been completely changed to tank water.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • 1. Check present tank water parameters to ensure they are at the proper levels.
  • 2. Never add shipping water directly to your tank as tranquilizers are present.
  • 3. This procedure should be done slowly and can take up to an hour.
  • 4. Watch fish carefully for any signs of distress during this procedure.
  • 5. If any signs of distress are noted slow down the procedure and increase oxygen flow.
  • 6. Once this process is complete and the fish look vibrant they can be placed carefully into their new home.
If you have any questions during this procedure our Fishmaster Thomas will be happy to help.

    Enjoy your new additions!!!
